Panic gripped the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos yesterday, Monday, February 23, as a fire outbreak at the Old Terminal 1 building disrupted operations and left passengers stranded. In a heroic rescue effort, the Airport Police Command confirmed that 12 workers trapped near the control tower were safely evacuated.
Flight Diversions and Injuries
The Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, reported that while there were no fatalities, six people sustained injuries. The fire forced major international carriers, including Emirates, British Airways, and Lufthansa, to divert their flights temporarily.
“We activated emergency protocols immediately,” Kuku stated, noting that a police helicopter was deployed for aerial support during the evacuation.
Current Status: Operations Relocated
As of Tuesday morning, normalcy has been restored. However, all flight operations have been fully relocated to the New Terminal. The Old Terminal remains closed pending a structural integrity assessment by engineers.
