WASE, PLATEAU — The Plateau State Police Command has confirmed a horrific incident at a mining site in the Kampani Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area, which has claimed the lives of at least 37 people. The disaster, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, February 18, 2026, also left 26 others hospitalized.

The Silent Killer: Toxic Gas Leak

While early reports suggested an explosion, preliminary investigations by the police and the Ministry of Solid Minerals revealed that the victims died from toxic gas inhalation. The miners, mostly young men aged 20 to 35, were working in an underground tunnel when a sudden discharge of lead oxide, sulphur, and carbon monoxide occurred in the poorly ventilated environment.

According to survivors, the miners had just returned to the pits at 6:00 AM after their morning prayers. Unaware of the poisonous fumes, they descended into the tunnels where they were suffocated almost instantly.

Government Response

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has ordered the immediate closure of the site, which is reportedly owned by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited. The Federal Government has dispatched a team of investigators, including experts in environmental compliance, to probe the cause of the leak and enforce sanctions.

Latest Status: The bodies of the deceased have been released to their families for burial according to Islamic rites. The site remains cordoned off by the military and police tactical teams.
