Before the world heard about the Oyo State forest meth factory, Nigeria had already witnessed an even bigger bombshell. Just weeks earlier, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) made what officials described as the most significant anti-narcotics seizure in the country's history — deep inside the Abidagba Forest in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Operation:

Operatives carried out simultaneous raids in Ogun and Lagos states on May 16 following months of intelligence gathering. The primary target was a remote farm in Abidagba forest being used as a massive, highly dangerous clandestine methamphetamine laboratory by the Anochili Innocent Drug Trafficking Organisation. The operation led to the discovery of an industrial-scale methamphetamine production facility and the seizure of over 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and related chemicals. Seven suspects were apprehended at the forest laboratory, including three Mexican nationals allegedly brought into Nigeria to produce methamphetamine. The arrested Mexicans were identified as Martinez Felix Nemecto, 46; Jesus López Valles, 40; and Torrero Juan Carlos, 51. (Premium Times)
Another tactical team simultaneously struck in Lagos. A raid on a residence in the Lakowe area of Lekki, Lagos led to the arrest of the alleged mastermind, identified as Anochili Innocent. (TheCable)

The Scale of the Seizure:

The numbers are staggering. The operation yielded 2,419.48 kilograms of chemical materials, including finished and liquid methamphetamine, toxic precursor chemicals and industrial solvents, with an estimated international street value of $362.9 million — translating to over N480 billion. A Pattern Takes Shape:

While the size of the discovery was unprecedented, Nigeria is not new to drug trafficking. For decades, it has been identified as a transit hub for illicit narcotics moving between Latin America, Europe and other destinations. But Nigeria is transitioning from primarily a transit and consumer market to an important producer and exporter of synthetic drugs. (ISS Africa)
The Ogun bust was more than a one-off. It was the opening act of a disturbing new chapter — one that would repeat itself in Oyo State just weeks later.

Conclusion:

The Abidagba Forest bust shattered records and raised urgent questions about how deeply international cartels had embedded themselves in Nigeria's South-West. With N480 billion worth of meth in a single forest, the message was clear: these weren't small-time dealers. They were running a transnational manufacturing empire — and Nigeria had been their chosen factory floor.
