A TEENAGE girl and her mum were killed when a rotting tree uprooted and crushed their car.
Elaine Reason, 56, and daughter Grace, 16, from Winchcombe, died when the mature beech tree fell on their Land Rover Freelander nearly three years ago.
The roots of the tree were decaying and the heatwave of 2018 exacerbated the deterioration, Gloucestershire Coroner's Court heard.
The tragedy happened at 10:15pm on November 21 2019 at Stanway Hill, near Winchcombe, in the Cotswolds.
Mrs Reason was driving on the B4077 with her daughter as a front seat passenger when the tree uprooted and crushed the car in medium wind.
The pair died at the scene after suffering multiple injuries.
The court heard Gloucestershire Police launched an investigation into the management of the tree and commissioned an independent expert.
